How ocean warming and acidification affect the life cycle of six worldwide commercialised sea urchin species: A review

چکیده

Abstract Ongoing global changes are expected to affect the worldwide production of many fisheries and aquaculture systems. Because invertebrates represent a relevant industry, it is crucial anticipate challenges that resulting from current environmental alterations. In this review, we rely on estimated physiological limits six commercialised species sea urchins ( Loxechinus albus , Mesocentrotus franciscanus Paracentrotus lividus, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis intermedius purpuratus ) define vulnerability (or resilience) their populations facing ocean warming acidification (OW&A). Considering coastal systems do not change uniformly populations’ response stressors varies depending origin, investigate effects OW&A by including studies estimate future mutations within distribution areas. Cross‐referencing 79 studies, find several urchin potentially vulnerable predicted as conditions in certain regions shift beyond limit tolerance. Specifically, while upper thermal thresholds seem be respected for L. along SW American coast, M. S. southern appear NW America. Moreover, result strong Arctic sub‐Arctic regions, local productivity also largely affected. Finally, P. lividus found northern Japan eastern Mediterranean respectively, supposed decline due large brought about OW&A. This review highlights status potential adaptation number changing conditions, revealing possible various fishing industries.

Impact of Ocean Warming and Ocean Acidification on Larval Development and Calcification in the Sea Urchin Tripneustes gratilla

BACKGROUND As the oceans simultaneously warm, acidify and increase in P(CO2), prospects for marine biota are of concern. Calcifying species may find it difficult to produce their skeleton because ocean acidification decreases calcium carbonate saturation and accompanying hypercapnia suppresses metabolism. However, this may be buffered by enhanced growth and metabolism due to warming. METHODOL...

Adaptive Capacity of the Habitat Modifying Sea Urchin Centrostephanus rodgersii to Ocean Warming and Ocean Acidification: Performance of Early Embryos

BACKGROUND Predicting effects of rapid climate change on populations depends on measuring the effects of climate stressors on performance, and potential for adaptation. Adaptation to stressful climatic conditions requires heritable genetic variance for stress tolerance present in populations. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We quantified genetic variation in tolerance of early development of t...

Long-term and trans-life-cycle effects of exposure to ocean acidification in the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis

Anthropogenic CO2 emissions are acidifying the world’s oceans. A growing body of evidence demonstrates that ocean acidification can impact survival, growth, development and physiology of marine invertebrates. Here, we tested the impact of long-term (up to 16 months) and trans-life-cycle (adult, embryo/larvae and juvenile) exposure to elevated pCO2 (1,200 latm, compared to control 400 latm) on t...
